On Friday 23rd of January, 50 pupils from year 11 piled onto a coach and journeyed to Chichester. We went to see the Chichester Festival Theatre’s production of ‘To Kill Mockingbird’, the groundbreaking and literary classic written by Harper Lee.
‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is one of the exam texts that two of the year 11 English Literature classes are studying. Seeing the book in front of us visually in the form of a play was a fantastic opportunity for us to consolidate our knowledge on the plot, the key themes of the novel and the main characters. This is all essential information we need to understand and include in our English Literature exam.
Earlier in the year, Lydia Wilkins in Year 11 approached English teacher, Ms Abrahams with the idea of producing a student-led school magazine.
Ms Abrahams agreed to help and over the last term has been working with a group of students to produce a magazine.
The school farm provides a valuable resource for many aspects of learning English.
Speaking and listening skills are enhanced by visits to the farm. The introductory talks illustrated by live visual aids provide a stimulating environment for listening/ recall skills.

Students at Oathall Community College have been treated to the first ever UK visit from prolific American ‘Manga’ artist, illustrator and author Mark Crilley. Mark’s visit was the result of a personal letter from Quinn Humphreys a student at the college who wrote asking if he would visit. Quinn, a fan of Mark’s work , sent such an impressive letter that Mark agreed to come to Oathall!
Mark, who is currently You Tube’s most subscribed artist, started producing his distinctive style in the early nineties while in Japan teaching English. He wrote and illustrated a comic book story for young readers and watched it grow into a popular comic-book series called “Akiko” that has won him a host of young fans around the world.
Mark is in school working with students in year 9 on a combined English and Art curriculum immersion day.
