Last Wednesday, a group of year 9 students from Oathall attended a journalism course at the Guardian newspapers London offices, where they got to experience the buzz and pressure of producing a front page using real live articles being prepared by Guardian journalists.

Working in small groups students checked real ‘wires’ sent in by journalists from around the world and learnt the techniques for displaying them on a professional style front page. Students took on the roles of reporters and editors researching and writing news stories as well as sub editing them. The experience was made as real as possible, students were working to tight deadlines throughout the day and were given first-hand access to the latest information that was updated continuously by real reporters.

Reporting for Oathall’s website, Year 9 student, Georgina Keane said:

It was an early start for everyone. We had to be at school at 7am in order to get the coach to London and arrive on time! This course, run by the Guardian’s educational officer, Elli Narewska, gave us a real taste of journalism as a career and was, overall, an enjoyable day out. We had to produce a front page using headline news stories that were live that day including a live robbery of a reporter in South Africa, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke being sued for copyright infringement and many more.
