Better Breakfast

16th October 2015J Godbolt

Making sure students get off to the best start in the mornings is important to us.  Eating a good breakfast provides the energy needed until lunchtime, improves concentration and can help to cut down on snacking. Too often students are missing out, choosing breakfast options that are high in sugar or fat or not having breakfast at all.

This week, students at Oathall will be learning about making better breakfast choices in tutor time and assembly. We hope that parents will support and encourage their child to make the right choices for a good breakfast. If you are interested in improving your breakfast habits Change 4 Life and NHS Choices have more information, breakfast ideas and tips.

The Kraken by Ella Hollingsworth

As part of our year-long celebration of Poetry, year 7 have been going sea poetry crazy in lessons. We have been reading Alfred Lord Tennyson’s infamous poem “The Kraken” and using it to base stories and poems of our own. Georgia White combined her baking skills for homework and “baked” Kraken biscuits alongside a short poem:

Kraken
Slimy slithering tentacles
Gargantuan body,
Looks ominous,
Waves are turbulent.

Kitty Underhill created a clay Kraken to complement her Kraken poem, (more…)

Post 16 Information and Advice

17th September 2015A Oathall

Following the recent Post 16 Opportunities Evening, students in year 11 should be planning their choices for continuing their education after their final year at Oathall.  Booklets containing advice and information about colleges, qualifications, apprenticeships and the application process are available under ‘Work Related Learning’.

Students are advised to check course information and entry requirements on the colleges’ websites as prospectuses are printed some time before and details do change.  This is particularly relevant to the changes being made to A levels over the next three years.

The deadline for all applications is MONDAY 23 NOVEMBER 2015.  All college applications must be brought to Ms Hart in the Careers Office (the exceptions being St Paul’s and Collyer’s as their application process is completed online).

If you are unsure about anything connected with this process please speak to Ms Hart.

Hola! Bonjour! Guten Tag!

10th July 2015J Godbolt

Students at Oathall have been busy celebrating the European Week of Languages. Everyone had the opportunity to develop their cultural knowledge of European countries. Year 7 students participated in a sensational Eurovision contest. They sang songs in French, Spanish and German. The winning group will be announced shortly (watch this space!). Students also had the opportunity to sample European cuisine with Year 9 classes cooking European pastries with Mr Maier. And students in Year 8 and Year 9 tried out Spanish tapas with Señor Henri and German food with Frau Stockley.

Other cultural activities included working on a project about a European artist, learning how to play ‘la pétanque’ and studying the film‘ Les choristes’. Oathall staff demonstrated their hidden talents as they were challenged to say ‘hello’ in any language by Year 8 students.
We would like to thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation.

A bientôt ! Bis bald! ¡Hasta luego!

Oathall students pay their respects to the fallen soldiers of the Great War

26th June 2015J Godbolt

Oathall student Ruby Roe had the unique opportunity last week to lay a wreath at the grave of her great-great grandfather, Harry Freeman. Ruby visited his grave on a World War I history trip to Belgium. 44 students in year 9 travelled from Oathall for a tour of the battlefields and cemeteries surrounding the town of Ypres.  The trip took place to give students a greater awareness of the conflict. They visited sites and cemeteries to gain an understanding of the bravery and suffering of the fallen and to reinforce what they had learnt in the classroom.
