National Poetry Day, the annual mass celebration of poetry and all things poetical is held in October.
As part of our year-long celebration of Poetry, year 7 have been going sea poetry crazy in lessons. We have been reading Alfred Lord Tennyson’s infamous poem “The Kraken” and using it to base stories and poems of our own. Georgia White combined her baking skills for homework and “baked” Kraken biscuits alongside a short poem:
Kraken
Slimy slithering tentacles
Gargantuan body,
Looks ominous,
Waves are turbulent.
Kitty Underhill created a clay Kraken to complement her Kraken poem,
Underneath the ocean where all is tranquil and calm,
Rests a sullen abysmal creature able to cause such harm,
His size seems almost impossible; one eye on it’s own is gargantuan.
Where he lives is a magnificent sea bed mansion.
He is infamous for causing ghastly trouble therefore his sleep should never be disrupted.
If he was, be prepared for chaos and all peace to be disrupted.
Kayleigh-Anne Parkhurst and Luke McClelland excelled with their factfiles and research about the Kraken. Luke commented
“The Kraken poem for me is absolutely stunning. The words and description are so powerful and majestic.”
A stunning display has also been created by Mrs Abrahams, showcasing work on “The wreck of the Hespurus”. This is all part of the Sea scheme of work, incorporating a new play “When the last light fades” and classic poetry.
