New students joining in September 2017

6th September 2017J Godbolt

Welcome to all of our new students.

Transition team

Our transition leader Mrs Jane Newnham has been working with our local primary schools to prepare students for moving on to secondary school. In July, your child will attend the induction day and meet their tutor. Your child’s tutor will be responsible for your child’s pastoral care. Mrs Newnham also works with our team of Assistant Heads of House. They provide pastoral support for all of our students.

  • For enquiries about transition arrangements please contact Mrs Jane Newnham, Transition Coordinator [email protected].
  • For enquiries/discussion about children with medical conditions please contact Mrs Polly McDonald [email protected].
  • For all other enquiries, please contact [email protected]. Your message will be directed to a member of Oathall staff who is in the best position to help you.

Information

Parents of new year 7 students have been sent information packs in May. These contain forms and information about the transition process. Please refer to these if you are unsure about any of the arrangements for starting at Oathall.

In late August, we will contact you again with further information about the online systems we use for homework, timetables, school reports and our online payment system.

Equipment and Uniform

Students need to be prepared for lessons at all times. In the first week, we expect students to be equipped with pens, pencils and rulers held in a suitable pencil case. On the first day, students will be given a timetable and student handbook. During the following fortnight, students will be told by their subject teachers if they need any special equipment such as calculators and you will be given exercise books.

From then onwards, students need to make sure they have everything they need for lessons that day. This will include:

  • Pens and pencils with other essential items in a suitable case
  • Their timetable and student handbook
  • Exercise books, files or textbooks (some teachers keep students’ exercise books in class)
  • PE Kit (check if indoor or outdoor lesson)
  • DT food ingredients if required

We recommend students check their timetables the night before to ensure they are prepared for the next day.

Uniform details can be found here.

Food and drink at school

Students are expected to remain in the college during break and lunch times. Students may bring their own food to eat or they may eat in the canteen. Students will be registered with a canteen account on their first day. Information about the canteen and how this works is included in your information pack. Online payment details will be sent out in late August.

Travel to school

We expect all of our students to travel to school using sustainable transport. Most students walk to school or arrive by school bus. Students should enter by the Washington Road footpath, the Albemarle Drive or the Appledore Garden entrance. There are no other entry points into the school.

We expressly ask parents not to drive onto the school site to drop off or collect students in the morning or after school. The vehicle access into Oathall is narrow and not designed to allow for a large number of vehicles to arrive and turn around at the same time. This entrance is used by the school buses which must take priority over other vehicle users. The narrow drive entrance is also located in a residential area and a build up of traffic at our entrance causes congestion and inconvenience to our neighbours. If you have to drop your child by car please drop them off or collect them at the Washington Road roundabout entrance where there is more space.

For evening events we allow parking on site.

Impressive GCSE results

24th August 2017J Godbolt

Congratulations to Oathall students who are celebrating a very impressive set of results for 2017.

Oathall students have responded well to the challenges set by the newly reformed GCSEs. The new grading system and more challenging content has been met with hard work and commitment. As a result, in English and mathematics 75% of Oathall students have achieved passes. In mathematics 20% and in English 28% were awarded grade 7 or higher.

In comparison to the national results released today by Ofqual, it is clear that Oathall students achieved notably higher outcomes at all levels.

The fact that 22% of all grades, across all subjects were awarded at the very highest levels (A+/7+) illustrates how ambitious Oathall students are to excel academically. There were many individual success stories with some 12% of the year group achieving 8 or more grades at these highest (A+/7+) levels.

The college has seen excellent results in all areas of the curriculum. Notably, 31% of all grades across the humanities subjects (geography, history and RE) were awarded at A+ and biology, chemistry and physics 46% of all grades were at this highest level. In sport and performance subjects 75% of grades were awarded at C+ and in technology and the arts, 84% of all grades were at C+.

Mr Rodriguez, Headteacher congratulated all the students on their results and said:
‘I am delighted to see how Oathall students have met the challenges of the reformed GCSE’s and performed so well over the entire range of subjects; they so deserve their successes today.”

Details of our 2017 GCSE results are available here.

Congratulations‎ to our year 11 artists Holly Jones, Naomi Johnson, Jessica Laimons and photographer Katie Hastings whose work was selected to be exhibited in the NSAE held in the prestigious Mall Galleries under the patronage of The Royal Society of British Artists. We are delighted that eight pieces of work were exhibited from our students demonstrating the exceptional talent and commitment to excellence at Oathall. Art pieces submitted by Tristan Redgrove and Millie Brown were also highly commended.

Chris Russell, CEO, “It is encouraging to find that in times of serious funding problems, schools still want to celebrate their art at national level. Anyone seeing the impact of selection on the artists, teachers and parents will be uplifted, as they will by the enormous effort and commitment that goes into such an exhibition.”

Oathall success at South of England show

20th June 2017J Godbolt

From left to right: Jordan Hards, James Guy, Rhys Chester (in green), Aaron Head (all Oathall Year 10 students), Luke Timms, Cameron Terry, Angel Knott, Liam Rollings. (All Woodlands Meed Year 11) Back row: Mr John Blackholly and Ms Chris Candy from Woodlands Meed.

Oathall’s students were celebrating after being awarded first place for their garden design entry at the South of England show in June. First place was well deserved with our students competing against garden design students from Brinsbury and Plumpton Colleges. Well done to James Guy, Jordan Hards, Rhys Chester and Aaron Head who gave up much of their own time in support of the project and learnt much throughout the process.

It wasn’t just about garden design. As is our usual tradition Oathall students participated fully in the show helping out in the parade and showing our pigs and cattle. Harry Woodington was successful in showing our large white adult breeding sow. She came first in the large white class, a testament to all the early starts and hard work that Harry put in to prepare her for the show. Jacob Wall also did well, coming second in his cattle handling class.

Mr John Blackholly said,

“Well done to everyone associated with Oathall Farm It was a massive team effort from all concerned and we are justifiably proud of all our achievements. Thank you to all the students but in particular to all the staff, parents and former Oathall students who gave up their time to support our efforts.”

The theme for the annual Bake Off competition at Oathall is the South of England Agricultural Society. This year they are celebrating 50 years of showcasing agriculture, horticulture and the countryside.

This year eight finalists were selected from entries by students from Oathall and Warden Park. Competitors were given 4 hours to bake and decorate their cake creations before they were judged by John de Longa, President of the Haywards Heath Rotary club and his colleagues Nigel Voakes and Vic O’Farrell along with Anne Bradshaw and Sue Perkins from Franklands Village Women’s Institute and Oathall’s Catering Manager, Sue Denyer.

The cake decoration reflected themes of farming & the countryside as well as the South of England Show. In the end, they awarded first prize to Janu Ramkissun, second prize went to Seren Billson and third prize went to Emily Brock. All the competitors received an embroidered apron and recipe book for taking part with gift vouchers for the top three places.

The cakes made by the students will go on display at the Ardingly Showground, in the Norfolk Pavilion at the weekend.

Best selling Author Visit

6th April 2017J Godbolt

The Library team are always looking for ways to inspire students to read more. This month they arranged a visit to the school by international best-selling author C J Daugherty

Christi Daugherty is the best-selling author of The Night School, a series of thrillers for young adults. Christi visited the school along with her husband Jack Jewers, an award-winning director. Together they have created the Night School web series, the first British web series based on a young adult book. Christi spoke to Y7 students about her path to becoming an author and about the importance of writing in everything that we do.

Students were enthralled by her real-life stories of working for the Home Office in counter-terrorism and asked her lots of questions about what inspired her to write, how she comes up with the ideas behind her stories – especially the end of the book and what she would have become if she had not become an author. At the end of her talk, she signed copies of her books for students.

After her visit, her husband Jack sent the school an email saying

CJ had a great time, as did I, and it was a pleasure to meet you and the kids. Please pass on to them that they really impressed us with their questions too.
