Rock Challenge 2017

16th February 2017J Godbolt

web-banner2

On the 6th of February, 56 enthusiastic Oathall students took part in Rock Challenge at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley, where we competed against several other schools and colleges.

This year our dance was called ‘The Forest Is Our Home’ and was an environmental piece about deforestation. Our performance took the audience on a journey through the beautiful and captivating rainforest where indigenous people live in harmony with the forest until logging tradesmen threaten to destroy their homes for profit. The performance describes how the indigenous people fight against the logging industry to rebuild and regrow.

Our students have worked hard since last October to put together this 8-minute dance performance. The sound and light team supported the performers with the set, videoing the performance and creating effective and atmospheric lighting designs. They were able to learn from the professionals managing the desks. Throughout the day itself everyone had a fantastic experience and by the end of the evening, we had won awards for performance, entertainment and lighting.

We are very proud of the students who took part in this year’s Rotary Club public speaking competition. This year we had 4 intermediate teams from years 7-9 taking part. They chose the following topics: badger culling, food for thought, a healthcare comparison and calming the mind. Very well done all the team members for their impressive deliveries and a special mention to Kitty Underhill in year 8 for winning the prize for being the best chairperson.

175th Anniversary of Haywards Heath station

16th September 2016J Godbolt

Last term students from Oathall were invited to contribute to a poetry anthology in recognition of the 175th anniversary of Haywards Heath Station. The English faculty was inundated with fantastic entries and had difficulty selecting the top thirty poems. However, we did, and we are delighted that they have been published in such a beautiful book. We are grateful to everyone who contributed towards the writing and publishing of the poems.

Students whose poems have been published will receive a copy of the anthology via assemblies.

More information about the activities celebrating the railway coming to Haywards Heath can be found here.

Congratulations to GCSE Art student and Oathall Head Boy, John Moore whose artwork was selected to be exhibited at The Mall Galleries, London. John’s piece was a portrait of fellow student Jack Davidian-Judd.The likeness was created by the meticulous weaving of threads back and forth across a grid of nails to reproduce the image.

This is the fourteenth year of the National Students’ Art Exhibition held under the patronage of the Royal Society of British Artists. The exhibition is truly inspirational featuring the best young artists in the country alongside work from some of the finest professional artists.

James Horton MA RBA (President)said,

“The work chosen is carefully selected to represent the very best of what is being produced in schools across the nation. With one aim in mind which is to send the strongest message possible, to all our young artists that our society needs creative people, who will enrich the fabric of our culture and who will be taken seriously by professional bodies such as ours, and who will also become the next generation of respected professionals.”

Everyone’s a winner!

17th June 2016J Godbolt

It’s been a fortnight of competitions for staff and students at Oathall – with winners all round.

Over 50 students from Oathall took part in the 2016 South of England show. Our Students showed our  Ayrshire cattle with great professionalism taking a fourth and a fifth place. We also showed commercial pigs on behalf of Andrew Strong gaining two first places. And, as in previous years, students gave their support to the show by carrying the breed boards for the cattle parade in the main arena. (more…)

Judo success for Oathall students

The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School Judo Team, with Oathall students Hannah (pictured kneeling on the far left), Azhar (pictured front row, fourth from the right) and Thomas (picture standing back row, second from left).

At this year’s 2016 Sussex County Judo trials, Oathall students, Hannah Nelson, Azhar Ahmed and Thomas Abram were worthy winners of Bronze medals in their respective categories.

All three students train at Oathall and at the Mid Sussex Martial Arts School where they are taught Judo as a martial art and not as a ‘competitive sport’. Despite that, our students have gone on to compete and as a result have all secured places in the Sussex County Judo Squad for 2016.

MUNGA 2015

20th November 2015J Godbolt
MUNGA-2015

More photos of the event can be seen on the college’s Flickr site.

This week, over 35 students from Oathall and St Paul’s Catholic College took part in MUNGA.  The Model United Nations General Assembly or MUNGA involves students in recreating the work of the United Nations.

Students represent countries from across the globe, debating and amending resolutions on international topics. On this occasion, debate issues were on the availability of clean water and poverty. This involved preparing for the event by researching their country’s standpoints as well as gaining a thorough knowledge of a range of moral and political viewpoints.

On the day, each country’s delegation prepares an introductory speech and, just like the real United Nations, delegates both lobby and debate each resolution.  After argument and compromise between delegations resolutions were passed, albeit in amended forms.

We are grateful to Martin Sinclair for his support and for chairing the assembly itself with considerable gravitas.

Congratulations to all the delegates from Oathall and St Paul’s. They demonstrated considerable maturity, enthusiasm and respect.
