Adverse weather / School closures

18th January 2013Oathall

In extreme or severe weather conditions a decision about whether the college will be closed will be made as soon as possible. Many factors need to be considered in determining if we can operate the college safely. Information relating to any school closure will in the first instance be posted prominently on the school website. Local radio stations and the local authority will also be informed.

School closure during the day

In addition to the above, parents will be contacted via Parentmail & Parentmail text as soon as a decision has been made. We will ensure that any pupil who cannot get home safely will be supervised at school until parents have been able to make suitable arrangements. If there is a problem for your child then please contact the school as soon as possible.

Carols in the community and on the BBC

10th December 2012Oathall

On Friday 7 December, Oathall students in years 7  to 10 entertained residents at Balcombe Place Care Home with a set of Carols and Christmas songs. The elderly residents also took part and sang along with the students. Students were rewarded with a Christmas tea and an invite to return and sing at anytime.

Listen here to Oathall students singing ‘O Holy Night’

Oathall students can be also heard on BBC radio Sussex singing ‘O Holy Night’ on Tuesday 11 December at around 15:40. Mrs Mac Taggart submitted this recording of ‘O Holy Night’ to the BBC after they put out a request for schools and community choirs  to submit recordings of Christmas music to be played every day in the run up to Christmas. Oathall was one of the schools to have been selected.

Year 11 students from our Level 2 Environmental and Land-Based Diploma Course took part in the planting of an American Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) on Friday 23rd November 2012.

The planting at Muster Green was one of 60 trees planted throughout Britain to mark the Queen’s Jubilee and were donated by The Tree Council.

We hope that our students will work alongside Haywards Heath Tree Warden Alan Colgate in the future as they continue their studies.

You Tube’s most subscribed artist, Mark Crilley visits Oathall!

22nd November 2012Oathall

Students at Oathall Community College have been treated to the first ever UK visit from prolific American ‘Manga’ artist, illustrator and author Mark Crilley.  Mark’s visit was the result of a personal letter from Quinn Humphreys a student at the college who wrote asking if he would visit.  Quinn, a fan of Mark’s work , sent such an impressive letter that Mark agreed to come to Oathall!

Mark, who is currently You Tube’s most subscribed artist, started producing his distinctive style in the early nineties while in Japan teaching English.  He wrote and illustrated a comic book story for young readers and watched it grow into a popular comic-book series called “Akiko” that has won him a host of young fans around the world.

Mark is in school working with students in year 9 on a combined English and Art curriculum immersion day.
