Pupils from Haywards Heath primary schools joined students from Oathall Community College today for a morning of music and singing at Oathall’s Big Sing. Now in its third year, the Big Sing aims to boost the musical confidence and experience of Year 5 and 6 pupils by allowing them to perform with older students under the expert tutelage of Emily Barden, Head of Vocal Studies at WSCC Music and music teacher Martijn Van Galen.

Pupils in Year 5 and 6 came to the event from Bolnore Primary School, Lindfield Primary School, Warden Park Primary and St Augustine’s CE Primary school. The pupils learnt to perform, in three part harmony, the songs ‘Happy’ by Pharrel Williams and the South African lullaby ‘Thula mama’. They were accompanied by musicians from Oathall’s jazz band and orchestra.

Mrs Mac Taggart, Head of Performance at Oathall, said:

‘It was a delightfully uplifting morning. We all started out quite demurely but everybody ended up singing, dancing and clapping along to both songs; it was a real party atmosphere. It is wonderful to see how singing boosts the confidence of children of all ages and strengthens our links within the community.’
