Spirited Art Competition

23rd November 2022Joanna Patch

Years 7 and 8 are invited to take part in the Spirited Arts Competition for RE and ART.

Spirited Arts is an annual competition run since 2004 for pupils studying RE. The competition gives a chance to be creative and imaginative in RE and Art. It is all about spiritual ideas as well as individual skills.

Themes for this year’s competition:

  1. “We have more in common than that which divides us”
  2. Green faith, green future?
  3. Where is God today?
  4. Faith in action, Values in action
  5. Sacred Space and Holy Buildings
  6. All God’s Creatures?

If you would like to take part, please complete the form below:

If you would like any help with your entry, please come to Art Club (3.15-4.15 in the Art Block AD4) on the dates below if you are able to:

  • Monday, 27 February
  • Monday, 6 March
  • Monday, 13 March

Students can choose from one of the RE themes listed above and respond to it in any way they like, as long as it is creative, original, and shows a deep understanding of RE. For example, in the past, students have responded through; art (painting, drawing, sketching etc.), poetry, photography, music, and sculpture.

A piece of writing will need to accompany it, explaining the artwork.

Useful tip:

  • Written commentary on artwork should be under 300 words

Useful prompts (approximately 8 makes a good set):

  • The title I chose is … because …
  • The deepest thing about my work is …
  • The religion that inspired my work is …
  • My RE artwork …
  • This artwork is spiritual because …
  • I think my work connects to religion because …
  • A quote from a holy book that fits with my work is …
  • I’ve been investigating …
  • This picture is all about …
  • In RE it is good to explore … so …
  • Doing this work has made me think …
  • I’ve tried to show my thoughts/ideas/vision/feelings by …
  • I’ve discovered …
  • In my picture, you can see …
  • What I like best about my work is …
  • I hope people will notice …
  • This work has helped me to realise …
  • If you look carefully at the work, you will see …
  • My vision is …
  • To make the image, what I did was …
  • I like the theme I have been working on because …
  • My main ideas are …
  • My inspiration came from …
  • While I was making this, I thought a lot about … and I would like to say …

We will choose 10 entries from each year group to win a prize. 10 of these will be entered into NATRE’s international competition, alongside entries from schools all over the world! House points will also be awarded for effort, artwork and explanation.

Last year over 50,000 pieces were created. Take a look at NATRE’s website to see some of the fantastic pieces of artwork, poems, songs and dances that students have previously submitted. They will give you an idea of what a winning entry might look like and examples of how to interpret a theme.

Entries must be submitted to Mrs McMillan by Monday, 17th April 2023.

Good luck!
