Tutor time – Literacy Book Box Scheme
To support our continuing literacy campaign we are launching a book donation scheme whereby all students are encouraged to donate a book that they wish share with other students and staff at the school.
This term all tutors will be collecting books that students have enjoyed reading and putting them into tutor book boxes. The books can be fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels or poetry.
Reading for pleasure has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of a child ( OECD, 2002) and improvements in literacy, at any point in life, can have a profound effect on the individual. To support this we are therefore planning a whole range of activities to encourage reading and literacy in general.
Further details will follow, but events will include:
- competitions
- “Get caught reading” – in obscure places – photographs to be taken and prizes will be given to the winners
- themed events
- book reviews
In addition we are pleased to announce that the LRC has installed new online library software, “Eclipse.net” enabling students to access their library records online, reserve books and see if they have overdue books; find information about further reading, book reviews, in addition to keeping track of the Oathall top ten books of the week.
