Our Year 9 students recently made a date with experts representing more than twenty different employment sectors from around West Sussex including media, hospitality, the sciences, construction, professional services.
The students gathered in the sports hall and discussed roles, responsibilities, qualifications and routes of entry for various sectors in small groups.
Mr Blackholly who helped organise the event said: “This experience gave the students a chance to engage in a one to one with professionals, to enquire and come away with a better understanding of what different types of job involve.”
We offer our students lots of advice via a dedicated team of staff, interactive events such as this one, educational visits and access to online resources like those found here.
Feedback from the employers
Martyn Woodington, an aircraft engineer from Virgin Atlantic Airways, said:
“This is an extremely useful opportunity for young students. This sort of experience would have made a huge difference to me when I was at school. I think that being able to get this type of insight into different types of employment opportunities is invaluable.”
Patricia Hegarty, editorial director at Caterpillar Book Publishers, said:
“Having an opportunity to create an awareness of my profession was very rewarding. It was clear that many students hadn’t considered the myriad of opportunities in the publishing industry and hopefully now a handful may consider it as an option.”
Professor Keith Caldecott, a research scientist from The University of Sussex, said:
“I really enjoyed talking to the students and was very impressed at their levels of interest in the Sciences. The University of Sussex is proud to have such a good relationship with Oathall.”
Mark Dunford, head of news and sport at Sussex Newspapers, said:
“I think the students got a lot out of the experience and I enjoyed answering their questions. I found it very rewarding and was impressed with how mature the students were for their age.”
Steve Crane, head chef at Ockenden Manor, said:
“I’m very pleased to support this event and share my experience. Through our links with the school we currently have an ex-Oathall student doing really well with us on an apprenticeship.”
