Year 9 students have recently attended the annual Careers Speed Dating event at Oathall, meeting representatives from employment sectors covering the media, healthcare and the sciences, uniformed services, construction, hospitality, performing arts, engineering, retail, sport and leisure, finance, social care and IT.

The aim of the event is for young people to talk face to face with people employed in these sectors, to learn about job roles, what skills and qualifications they will need and to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the range of career opportunities available to them in the future.

This event complements the Year 9 options process and students’ feedback is always incredibly positive.

It was especially pleasing that some of the 30 participating business representatives were former Oathall students and members of the school’s Alumni Association. Former alumni said of the event:

‘As an alumnus of OCC, I was delighted to take part in this careers event.  By giving students a brief exposure to several diverse jobs in one hit is a superb way of encouraging them to think more long-term about how their GCSE and A level choices may have a bearing on their future careers.’

Ben Higgins, HR Director, Societe Generale

‘It was an entertaining and rewarding experience to meet with the students at Oathall’s Careers Speed Dating.  I walked away feeling that our future was in safe hands!’
David Amor, Games Developer, Delinquent Interactive

‘A very enjoyable morning, the students were enthusiastic and welcoming. It’s a brilliant way to show the students about the wide range of career options available and the different routes you can take after school.’
Dr Sarah Bruce, General Practitioner

‘I really enjoyed revisiting Oathall.  It was a great opportunity to meet some of the students and share my experience of school and working life.  The students were lovely and welcoming and made the experience all the better.  Thank you for the opportunity and I hope I was able to help.’
Jade Laker, Pruners Hair & Beauty
