The greenhouse in full bloom!

Our greenhouse in full bloom!

Students studying for land based qualifications or taking part in extra-curricular activities enjoy using our glasshouses; they are also used by visiting community groups and organisations.

Students studying lots of different subjects at OCC also use the glasshouses in projects, technology students study the heat, light and ventilation controls and our young artists use the plants we grow here to study form colour and design for example.

Located on the farm, the glasshouses provide a base for the school’s gardening club which helps our students to develop a range of practical skills through real experiences.

As well as growing flowers and bedding plants, making wreaths and hanging baskets the group also grow vegetables and enjoy making delicious meals out of fruits of their labour.

Our students often take part in shows and competitions, in the past Oathall has won several prizes for original horticultural designs at the South of England Show.

We also take part in a variety of projects in the local area. In the past we have helped transform an overgrown patch of land near the Orchards Shopping Centre in Haywards Heath and install raised flower beds at a local residential care home.

Our students enjoy going offsite to demonstrate their skills and this work has always been well received.

The glasshouse in numbers

  • It measures 12 metres x 8 metres
  • We grow over 1000 plants in it annually
  • We take 300 – 400 cuttings
  • It costs just £40 per annum in seeds
  • We keep the air temperature between 16 – 21° C for the best results.
